Description
GAUL - CELTIC Armorica / Coriosolites. Stater with a wild boar, undetermined class ND (late first half of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). DT.2339-2341; Billon – 6.42 g – 21.5 mm – 11 h Specimen MP no. 82 in the book *Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises*, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from A. Weil in 1996. The obverse is very worn but still identifiable, paired with a reverse that appears to have retained much of its original lustre. B to TB / Superb. This stater illustrates an interesting phenomenon in Gallic coinage: a worn obverse die paired with a new reverse die. Classifying the obverse type as either Class III or Class II may seem somewhat arbitrary, but the reverse bears the characteristics of MP No. 79 (from the André Breton collection)
