Description
GAUL - CELTIC Armorica / Coriosolites. Stater with a lyre, Class VI ‘with the nose in a 2-shape when upside down’, featuring a lyre and a small cross ND (late first half of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). Rennes 596 – DT. Series 365A, damaged; Billon – 6.02 g – 21.5 mm – 5 h MP specimen no. 70 in the forthcoming “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises” by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from CGB in 2007, MONNAIES 28, no. 618. Obverse and reverse perfectly centred on a wide flan. Grey, uniform patina. A chisel mark is visible on the reverse. Very Good to Superb. The classification of the Coriosolite coinage has been somewhat disrupted each time a researcher has taken an interest in it. J.-B. Colbert de Beaulieu was the first to propose distinguishing six classes. K. Gruel, whilst classifying the coins from the Trébry hoard (over 1,750 coins), updated this classification by establishing a relative and comparative chronology of neighbouring coinages (those of the Veneti and the Redoni). The chronology of the classes would be as follows: VIa, VIb, Va, Vb, IVa, IVb, I, III and II. The authors of the *Nouvel Atlas* qualify this chronology by suggesting the existence of several mints – at least two (as two groups could be identified with no connection between their dies: VI, V and IV on the one hand, and I, III and II on the other). Our specimen corresponds to K. Gruel’s class VIb, which appears to be missing from the *Nouvel Atlas*; the two specimens DT. 2329 and 2330 feature a wild boar rather than a lyre and, furthermore, lack the cross in front of the breast. The Rennes Museum holds only a single specimen of this very rare coin (no. 596). On the reverse, the centring of our coin reveals the exergue adorned with a wavy line, like a wave
