Description
GAUL - CELTIC Lemovices. Drachma, Class I with the circle centred beneath the horse, var. 1 ND (late 2nd – first third of the 1st century BC). LT.4561 - DT.3414; Silver – 2.21 g – 13 mm – 10 h MP specimen no. 14 in the book *Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises*, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from Y. Cellard in 2008. A drachma on a short but regular flan, with perfectly centred and complete designs. A fine iridescent grey patina, with a brown area above the head on the obverse and in front of the horse’s chest on the reverse. Superb. Whilst these drachmas are similar to the Bituriges coinage, with a very close resemblance on the obverse, the reverse featuring a cut-off head appears to be characteristic of issues attributed to the Lemovices. Within this series, there are numerous variations depending on the orientation of the obverse and reverse, as well as the motif between the horse’s legs (a dotted ring, a beaded and dotted ring, or three rings arranged in a triangle).
