GAUL - CELTIC Carnutes. Bronze coin depicting a horse, a wild boar and a disc, CAR 18, Class 1 ND (second half of the 1st century BC). Left side missing – DT.2453 – IDF CAR 18, Class 1; Bronze – 2.87 g – 16 mm – 7 h Exemplar MP no. 133 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from S. Gouet in 2006 – MONNAIES XV, no. 1171. A coin of exceptional quality with a magnificent reverse but an incomplete obverse on the front of the face. Beautiful dark, glossy green patina with a flash of patina on the chin. Superb. This specimen was one of the first to be published, only in 2002 in MONNAIES XV (even though this type had already appeared in 1840 in J. Lelewel’s Atlas); it is illustrated as a type coin in the *Revue d’Archéologie d’Île-de-France*, a regional catalogue raisonné of struck bronzes, by B. Foucray, p. 359, fig. E. He studied 16 specimens of this Class I (average weight 2.51 g). Class II is much rarer, and the broken line in front of the face is replaced by two crescents forming an X and a pentagram. The horse is harnessed on Class I specimens, but unrestrained on the rare Class II specimens. The wheel always appears to have four spokes on Class I specimens, whereas it has four (A and C) or eight (B and D) on Class II specimens.
