Description
GAUL - CELTIC
Longostalètes. ‘Romanised’ Languedoc-style drachma, Series 50 ND (mid-3rd – first half of the 2nd century BC).
LT.3104 – Savès 269 and 287* R/ – MGC A50.14 – R50.7 (this specimen no. 33); Silver – 3.28 g – 16.5 mm – 8 h
MP specimen no. 19 in the book *Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises*, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from P. Crinon in 2004.
A wide and slightly irregular flan for this drachma, which is slightly off-centre on the obverse but well centred on the reverse. Grey patina, previously cleaned or rubbed. Superb.
On this coin, the tip of the lock of hair gives the impression of a small bead resting in front of the eyebrow. This coin, with the reverse die R50-7, combines two very distinct obverse types (see A5011 and A50.14)
