Description
GAUL - CELTIC Dacia. Drachma featuring the types of Alexander III and Philip III ND (2nd–1st centuries BC). LT.9646 var. – Dembski 1492 – Flesche 747 var. ; Silver – 2.71 g – 16.5 mm – 11 h Specimen MP no. 263 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from A. Weil in 2002. Perfectly centred drachma with complete designs. Weak strike or more pronounced wear on the obverse. Grey patina. Very Fine / Very Fine to Superb. This type featuring a seated Zeus is known from tetradrachms (the earliest of high quality and the latest almost single-sided, struck with obverse dies that were completely worn out) and from drachms of varying stylisation. This specimen corresponds to the final phase of this coinage, modelled on the issues of Philip III; the style is highly distinctive and the inscriptions have been replaced by beaded motifs.
