AUSTRIA Holy Roman Empire (962–1806). Gold medal, known as the Prague Jewish medal (Judenmedaille), Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian I, 1486 (1620–1650, modern cast), Prague. Gilded pewter – 15.68 g – 51 mm – 12 h From the Claude Silberstein collection. Gilded pewter cast (late 19th – early 20th century?). Superb. Mary of Burgundy was the only daughter of Duke Charles the Bold. She married Maximilian I in August 1477. This series of medals, in the 15th-century style, is poorly documented. It is believed to originate from Prague, having been produced around the years 1620–1650, and is thought to be the work of an unidentified Jewish goldsmith. It comprises mainly medals depicting emperors and the Holy Roman Empire, often presented in pairs: Charlemagne, Charles IV of Luxembourg, Henry and Constance, Albert II and Elizabeth of Luxembourg, Frederick III and his son Maximilian I, Eleanor of Portugal, Maximilian I and his wife Mary of Burgundy, and the coronation of Maximilian I. It also includes depictions of saints: Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, Saint Margaret, Saint Catherine; and kings: Peter I of Spain, Philip VI of Valois and Blanche, Louis XII and Anne of Brittany, Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, etc.
