Description
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Louis XV (1715–1774). Double sol, known as the ‘big L’, probable period forgery from 1742, H, La Rochelle. Dy.1690 - G.281 - Lec.158 - ; Billon - 1.84 g - 23 mm - 6 h With virtually all its silver plating intact. Superb, in mint condition. This specimen features a variety known as “with the large L and large crowns”. The variant consists of a perforated wheel on the obverse and a cross on the reverse, instead of a star and a tower as per the archives. This variety is often mistaken for a contemporary forgery, but Clairand, 2023, no. 34200 does not mention it and assigns it an R2 rating [but where can one find an authentic specimen?] whilst CGB VSO 13, 2007, no. 1454 states: “Counterfeit double sol de billon incorrectly classified as a double sol with a large L and large crowns”
