FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Louis XV (1715–1774). Medal commemorating the establishment of the Chamber of Commerce and the consular jurisdiction for the merchants of Lille by Jean Duvivier, 1715, Paris. Lec.cf 322 – Betts cf.111 – Nocq 29 (Bnf.2297); Copper – 14.06 g – 34 mm – 12 h Presumably a composite of two electrotyped plates of excellent workmanship, with a very smooth edge. Superb. This medal, sometimes attributed to the ‘colonial’ sphere, commemorates the establishment of the Lille Chamber of Commerce and the creation of the consular jurisdiction for Lille’s merchants, following their request and an edict by King Louis XIV in February 1715. It was struck in 1717, according to the Journal de la Monnaie des Médailles no. 863, by Jean Duvivier, featuring a childlike bust of Louis XV. The reverse bears the motto of a Parisian token from 1688. Subsequently, this medal was struck with the bust in court dress; a few examples of this design are known to exist in gold, silver and bronze.
