FRANCE / FEUDAL - FRANCE / FEUDAL Brittany, the seigneury of Rochefort. Seal matrix of Marie de Rochefort, date unknown (14th century). A. Toulmouche, *Research into Coins and Antiquities Found during Excavations on the Vilaine in the Years 1841–42–43–44–45–46*, p. 155, pl. VII, figs. 2 and 2a (this object!); Brass – 53.92 g – 41.5 mm – 12 h Discovered in the vicinity of the Île bridge over the Vilaine during excavations carried out between 1841 and 1846. The inscription reads: S MARIE DE ROCHEFORT AVS CONTRAS D’OVRE. Above the shield, MOR[...]. A fine, medium-sized medieval seal matrix; the coat of arms has yet to be clearly identified, featuring in particular the ‘vairé d’or et d’azur’ of the Rochefort family, and certainly a double-headed eagle. Very good condition. For the seigneury of Rochefort (Rochefort-en-Terre, Morbihan). Marie de Rochefort (1365–1418) was the daughter of Thibault III de Rochefort (1313–1364), Lord of Rochefort and Assérac, Viscount of Donges. She married Bertrand III Goyon, Lord of Matignon (this Breton branch moved to Normandy in 1421 before ascending to the throne of Monaco in 1731).
