FRANCE - FRANCE Third Republic (1870–1940). Single-sided cast medal, Battle of the Somme, by P. Roche, 1916, Paris (Canale). Roche 1922, 50 – Roche, Canale 35; Bronze – 489.09 g – 170 mm – 12 o’clock A screw-mounted suspension ring at 12 o’clock. A few spots in the patina. Rare. Superb. Pierre Henry Ferdinand Massignon, known as Pierre Roche (1855–1922), was a painter, sculptor, medallist, gemstone engraver and ceramicist. A former pupil of Dalou, Rodin and Roll, he exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français and at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, of which he was one of the founders. He was awarded a silver medal at the 1900 World’s Fair (Group II, Class 9) and exhibited at the New York International Exposition in 1910. This cast is part of a series of medals on the military history of the First World War, published in 1922
