FRANCE - FRANCE MEDALS - France, Louis XIV (1643–1715). Medal, Jean-Paul Bignon, by Thomas Bernard, 1704, Paris. MdP 1828, 492, p. 70; Copper - 32.89 g - 41 mm - 12 h Superb. Jean-Paul Bignon (1662–1743) was a clergyman and a senior civil servant who had a profound influence on the French cultural landscape under Louis XIV and Louis XV. As President of the Academy of Sciences, a role he held on several occasions from 1699 onwards, he played a crucial part in the reorganisation and revitalisation of this institution, thereby fostering the scientific progress of his era. Also appointed Librarian to the King, this brilliant mind and outstanding organiser modernised the Royal Library and edited the *Journal des savants*, becoming one of the greatest patrons of the arts and sciences of his time
