The Luxor Obelisk was erected with great pomp on 25 October 1836 by the engineer Apollinaire Lebas, using lifting machinery and gigantic capstans, on the Place de la Concorde. Originating from the Temple of Luxor, it was presented to France by Mehmet Ali, Viceroy of Egypt, at the instigation of Baron Taylor and subsequently Jean-François Champollion, in early 1830
