FRANCE - FRANCE MEDALS - France, Louis-Philippe I (1830–1848). Medal depicting the flooding of the Rhône and Saône rivers in Lyon, by L. Schmitt, 1840. Charvet 114; Bronze – 56.79 g – 48.5 mm – 12 h A blemish on the exergue on the reverse. Superb. In November 1840, Lyon suffered the worst flooding in its modern history: on 5 November, the Saône reached a record height of 7.41 metres, submerging the Presqu’île under more than two metres of water. This humanitarian and material disaster destroyed hundreds of adobe houses, particularly in the Vaise district, and claimed many lives. It marked a major turning point for the city, necessitating the construction of large stone quays and dykes to protect Lyon permanently from the river’s fury.
