FRANCE - FRANCE MEDALS - France, Louis-Philippe I (1830–1848). Medal commemorating the unveiling of the equestrian statue of Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orléans, by Barre ND (1845), Paris. Collignon - 1394 - Alvarez 583 - Ruedas 101 - Esc.51; Copper - 193.34 g - 71 mm - 12 h Hallmark (hand) COPPER on the edge. Superb. Following the accidental death of the Duke of Orléans, who had served in Algeria, two identical statues were created by Carlo Marochetti, one for the gardens of the Louvre in Paris and the other for the Place du Gouvernement in Algiers. Following the accident on 13 July 1842, the African Army and the Algerian population commissioned these statues to pay tribute to the young Duke, who had been very popular since the conquest of Algeria. It was erected in Place du Gouvernement in Algiers. The statue from Algiers was repatriated in 1962 and is now situated in Neuilly-sur-Seine. The second statue is at the Château d’Eu, which belongs to the House of Orléans.
