This medal was commissioned from Alfred Borrel by the Minister for Public Instruction and Fine Arts to mark Victor Hugo’s 82nd birthday. As it could not be completed in time for his birthday on 26 February, it was presented to him on 24 March 1884 by Minister Armand Fallières, the Director of Fine Arts Albert Kaempfen and the engraver Alfred Borrel [as reported in *Le Progrès de l’Indre*, 28 March 1884]. Victor Hugo died on 22 May 1885 at the age of 83, the year after this medal was produced
