FRANCE - FRANCE MEDALS - Burgundy. Plaque, in honour of Adrien Arcelin, by Devenet ND (1922), Paris. Bronze - 108.63 g - 75 x 53.5 mm - 12 o’clock BRONZE hallmark on the edge. Superb condition. Adrien Arcelin (1838–1904) was curator of the archaeology and history collections at the Mâcon Museum. In 1866, he discovered the exceptional prehistoric site situated at the foot of the Roche de Solutré. His meticulous excavations at this site in Saône-et-Loire unearthed vast accumulations of horse bones and flint tools of remarkable precision. Thanks to the work of this researcher from Mâcon, the Solutré site has become the benchmark for a major Upper Palaeolithic culture, named the Solutrean in honour of the place where it was discovered.
