FRANCE - FRANCE MEDALS - Burgundy. Medal depicting the Vix krater at the Chatillon-sur-Seine Museum, by Roland Irolla, 1987, Paris. Bronze – 220.13 g – 68 mm – 12 h Hallmark 1987 (horn) BRONZE on the edge. Superb. Located in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, the Vix krater is a monumental Greek bronze vessel dating from the 6th century BC, discovered in 1953 in the tomb of a Celtic princess. Measuring 1.64 metres in height and weighing 208 kilograms, it stands as the largest bronze krater from antiquity to have survived to the present day. This exceptional masterpiece, richly decorated with frieze motifs and mythological figures, bears witness to the importance of trade and cultural exchanges between the Mediterranean world and the Celtic communities.
