An engraver and military engineer of Lorraine origin, Sébastien Le Clerc was born in Metz in 1637 before going on to enjoy a brilliant career in Paris. Thanks to Colbert’s support, he became the official engraver to Louis XIV and the Royal Academy of Sciences, illustrating the great scientific advances of his time with remarkable precision. Although based at the French court, this exceptional artist maintained a strong connection throughout his life with his native Lorraine, whose cultural influence benefited from his immense success
