Émile Friant (1863–1932), born in Dieuze in the Moselle, grew up and studied painting in Nancy. He was awarded the first Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1883, the Salon Prize in 1888, and was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts on 9 June 1923
