ITALY MEDALS – Papacy and religion. Julius II (1503–1513). Cardinal Achille Grassi, Bishop of Bologna, by F. de Saint-Urbain, undated (early 18th century), Bologna? Beaupré - - Fantuzzi 1784, IV, p. 237; Bronze – 47.42 g Cast, with dotted fields. Very Fine to Superb. Born into a distinguished family in Bologna, the brilliant jurist Achille Grassi was created a cardinal in 1511 by Pope Julius II. Appointed Bishop of his native city that same year, he played a major political and pastoral role in stabilising Bologna following the expulsion of the Bentivoglio family. A close adviser to the popes, he also distinguished himself as a leading diplomat whilst serving as legate and apostolic nuncio in England and Switzerland.
