FRANCE - FRANCE MEDALS - Papacy and religion. Medal commemorating the fire at Chartres Cathedral, by Barre, 1837, Paris. Collignon 1114; Bell metal – 64.04 g – 56.5 mm – 12 h Struck from the metal of the bells melted down during the fire. Superb. A fire broke out in the cathedral’s attic on 4 June 1836, caused by the carelessness of plumbers carrying out repairs there. The fire spread rapidly, destroying the building’s wooden framework and lead roofing. Prefect Gabriel Delessert came from a family of bankers; he began his career by being appointed mayor of Passy in 1830, then prefect of the Aude and finally, in September 1834, prefect of Eure-et-Loir. He held office in Chartres until October 1836. His exemplary conduct during the fire of June 1836 earned him the gratitude of his fellow citizens and enabled him to continue his career as Prefect of Police in Paris. Remaining loyal to Louis-Philippe, he went into exile in England in February 1848 and did not return to France until his death in Passy on 29 January 1858.
