FRANCE - FRANCE MEDALS - Papacy and religion. Medal depicting a statue of Our Lady of France and the Basilica of Le Puy-en-Velay, by L. Pénin, 1860, Paris. Copper – 62.05 g – 50.5 mm – 12 h Hallmark (hand) ‘CUIVRE’ on the edge. Superb, in mint condition. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de l’Annonciation in Le Puy-en-Velay was elevated to the status of a minor basilica by a papal brief issued by Pius IX on 11 February 1856. The statue of Notre-Dame de France by the sculptor Jean-Marie Bonnassieux, cast from cannons captured at Sevastopol, was blessed on 12 September 1860
