On 2 July 1600, the Battle of Nieuwpoort pitted the army of the United Provinces, led by Maurice of Nassau, against the Spanish forces of Albert of Austria as part of the Eighty Years’ War. This clash resulted in a historic victory for the Dutch, who succeeded in defeating the formidable Spanish tercios thanks to innovative military tactics based on discipline and sustained fire. Despite the brilliance of this success on the battlefield, the victory had no strategic follow-up, as Maurice of Nassau was forced to retreat without having been able to capture Dunkirk, his main objective.
