In August 1834, the French priests Honoré Laval and François Caret, members of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Picpus, landed on the Gambier Islands to establish the very first permanent Catholic mission in the South Pacific. Faced with initial resistance from King Maputeoa on the main island of Mangareva, the missionaries first settled on neighbouring islands, where they succeeded in converting the local chiefs, leading to the widespread destruction of the marae (traditional temples) to make way for the new churches
