RUSSIA Nicholas II (1894–1917). Medal commemorating the military golden jubilee of Grand Duchess Alexandra Iossifovna, by A. Grilliches, 1899. Diakov 1293.1; Silver – 178.64 g – 68 mm – 12 h A heavy dent on the edge at 8 o’clock on the reverse, scraped at 12 o’clock and bearing a small hallmark. The specimen has been previously cleaned and has a shiny appearance beneath a grey patina. Very good condition. This medal commemorates the 50th anniversary of the appointment of Alexandra of Saxe-Altenburg, Grand Duchess Alexandra Iossifovna of Russia, as commander of the Cuirassier Regiment on 19 September 1849. This regiment was subsequently renamed the Glukhov Cuirassiers in 1857, the Glukhov Dragoons in 1860, the 6th Glukhov Dragoons in 1864 and then the 16th Glukhov Dragoons in 1882. Duchess Alexandra Iossifovna was the wife of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, the sixth child of Tsar Nicholas I.
