Description
ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Etruria, Populonia. Didrachm of XX units (XX asses) ND (3rd c. BC), Populonia. HGC 1, 109 - SNG ANS 84 v.; Silver - 7.77 g - 20.5 mm - 12 h Uniform strike on an oblong blank, faintly marked on the upper part of the head. Deposits of verdigris on reverse. VERY GOOD. The wealth of Populonia is attested by its coinage, which is by far the most important of the Etruscan cities. A particularly popular motif is the head of Medusa with its tongue hanging out. The Gorgon was known to the Etruscans as Metus, and her name later entered the Latin language as a borrowing for "fear".
