Description
GAULE - CELTIC Pagus Catuslugi. Bronze VIIRICIVS, class III ND (Gallic War and 2nd half of the 1st century BC). LT.8554 - DT.507 - RIG.304 ; Bronze - 2.47 g - 14 mm - 5 h With a green patina, barely touched on the horse. TTB to Superb. VIIRICIVS or VERICIVS epigraph bronzes constitute pagus coinage; 161 examples of the 4 classes have been discovered at the sanctuary of Bois-l'Abbé (Eu, Seine-Maritime). The name of the pagus is given on a plaque discovered there in 1965. The classification of the New Atlas has slightly disrupted the classification by turning Class II into Class I var. 2, which has the effect of transforming Classes II and III into Classes III and IV. We maintain the previous classification, which could still be refined, but which should not be simplified. Class III bronzes with a head on the right and a reverse with an anchor have a VIRICI legend which seems to be systematically normal and centripetal (cf. RIG. p. 9-10).
