Description
GAULE - CELTIC Bellovaques. Bronze with cockerel and human head ND (second third of the 1st century BC and Gallic War). LT.8584 - DT.509 - Scheers 474 ; Bronze - 2.50 g - 16.5 mm - 3 h With green patina. Superb. The rooster theme, which probably appeared among the Bellovaques in the late 50s BC, gave rise to various issues centred in the south-west of Ambien territory. This variety on a wide flan is very characteristic, with an obverse in the vein of DT.231 and 510, but with an innovation on the reverse by integrating a human profile into the body of the cock. This rare type is found at the Vendeuil-Caply, Estrées-Saint-Denis and Saint-Maur (Oise) sites. The Bracquemont type also has this typological feature, but with a stylised head of Rome on the right and a more "Roman" style, typical of the period following the Gallic War. It is interesting to note that this type of reverse is also found on bronzes from across the Channel (cf. ABC.737).
