Description
GAULE - CELTIC Rèmes / Belgium. ATEVLA/VLATOS denarius or drachma with pentagram, class I ND (1st century BC). DT.640 - LT.7186-7187 ; Silver - 1,78 g - 16 mm - 1 h Superb. Series 83 of the New Atlas includes all these epigraphic coins, both homotypic (with the legends ATEVLA / VLATOS, SENODON, and CALEDV) and related (CVPINACIOS / VLATOS). Although the traditional attribution is to the Rèmes, the reality seems different; the sources are spread across Belgium, from the sea coast to the Rhine, almost always in connection with pre-Augustan military camps (camp or sanctuary nearby). The authors of the Nouvel Atlas favour "the hypothesis that this coinage was used by auxiliary units of the Roman army, which circulated, thanks to military vectors in northern Gaul, during the 2nd half of the 1st century BC".
