Description
ROMAN REPUBLIC - ROMAN REPUBLIC L. Marcius Philippus. Denarius ND (56 BC), Rome. RRC.425/1 ; Silver - 3,74 g - 18 mm - 4 h TTB. Ancus Marcius was the fourth king of Rome (640-616 BC). The Marcia people claimed direct descent from this monarch, who introduced running water to Rome via an aqueduct. The equestrian statue refers to Quintus Marcius Rex (Caesar's great-uncle) who, in 144 BC, as Praetor, had the old aqueducts repaired and built the one that supplied water to the Capitol (Aqua Marcia). Lucius Marcius Philippus was monetary triumvir in 56 BC while his father, who bore the same name, was consul. He was then tribune of the plebs in 49 BC, praetor in 44 BC and suffect consul in 38 BC.
