Erected in Oran in 1898 to honour the sacrifice of Colonel de Montagnac and his men against the troops of Emir Abd el-Kader in 1845, the building by sculptor Jules Dalou had a mixed fate after independence in 1962. While France's statue was repatriated in 1966 and installed in Périssac, Gironde, the Algerian authorities chose to keep the figure of the Renommée in Oran, despite attempts by minister Maurice Couve de Murville in 1967 to have it returned. In a symbolic historical reversal, the original monument was refurbished by the city of Oran as a tribute to Emir Abd el-Kader, transforming a former emblem of the colonial conquest into a shrine to the glory of the Algerian national resistance.
