Abd el-Kader ben Muhieddine was born on 6 September 1808 near Mascara and died on 26 May 1883 in Damascus, Syria. A politician and military leader, he resisted the expeditionary corps of African troops for fifteen years (1832-1847) during France's conquest of Algeria. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour and the Order of Pius IX. He is also a writer, poet, philosopher and Sufi theologian. In Algeria, he is considered to be at the origin of the modern Algerian state.
