Description
ALGÉRIE - ALGERIA Abdelkader (1832-1847). Hardened wood medallion, Abd-el-Kader ND (1860-1870), Paris (Latry aîné et Comp). Esc - - Ruedas 27 ; Hardened wood - 119,54 g - 112,5 mm - 2 h From an iNumis 38 sale on 10 October 2017, No. 1186, then from the Pierre-René Bauquis collection. Medallion in hardened wood, with brass bail. Barely touched patina on the high reliefs. Superb. Abd el-Kader ben Muhieddine was born on 6 September 1808 near Mascara and died on 26 May 1883 in Damascus, Syria. A politician and military leader, he resisted the expeditionary corps of African troops for fifteen years (1832-1847) during France's conquest of Algeria. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour and the Order of Pius IX. He is also a writer, poet, philosopher and Sufi theologian. In Algeria, he is considered to be at the origin of the modern Algerian state. Hardened wood, an agglomerated material made from wood fibres and albumin, was patented by Lepage, Talrich et Cie in 1855. In 1859, the patent was transferred to Latry aîné et compagnie, who developed the use of this new material in the art industry by producing medallions, notably in 1862 for the Universal Exhibition in London (L'Illustration, 26 April 1862, p. 272).
