Description
ALGÉRIE - ALGERIA Second Empire / Napoleon III (1852-1870). Medallion, Marshal Pélissier duc de Malakoff, by Gustave Crauk 1856. Esc - - Ruedas - ; Bronze - 177,94 g - 112,5 mm - 12 h From the Pierre-René Bauquis collection. With a suspension ring. Gustave Crauk also made a bust of the Duc de Malakoff (Château de Versailles, MV.1998). Superb. Aimable Pélissier, made Duke of Malakoff after his exploits in the Crimea, remains a deeply controversial figure in the conquest of Algeria. Although he ended his career as Governor General in Algiers, his name is inextricably linked with the "enfumades" in Dahra in 1845, when he killed hundreds of members of the Ouled Riah tribe who had taken refuge in caves. This method of "pacification" through terror, although criticised by some in Paris, illustrates the extreme violence of the military administration that he embodied until his death in 1864.
