From the Pierre-René Bauquis collection.
German commemorative medal. Superb.
"It is 4 August 1914 at 4.08 am. The first cannon shot was fired by the German cruiser Breslau at Bône. A civil engineer, André Gaglione, was killed by a shell. He was the first French casualty of the 1914-1918 war; an hour later the cruiser Goeben bombarded Philippeville" [Jean Mélia, "Les Bombardements de Bône et Philippeville", Berger-Levrault éditeurs, Paris 1927].
