Description
ALGÉRIE - ALGERIA Third Republic (1870-1940). Medal, Charles de Foucauld à Béni-Abbès, by Anie Mouroux 1916, Paris. Esc.378 - Ruedas 70 ; Bronze - 148,23 g - 68 mm - 12 h From an iNumis 29 sale on 2 June 2015, No. 1315, then from the Pierre-René Bauquis collection. Hallmarked BRONZE on the edge. Superb. Charles de Foucauld settled in the Algerian Sahara, in Béni Abbès, to found a new congregation, but no one joined him. He lived with the Berbers and developed a new style of apostolate, seeking to preach not by words but by example. For more than twelve years, he studied Tuareg culture and published the first Tuareg-French dictionary. On 1 December 1916, Charles de Foucauld was murdered outside his hermitage. He was soon considered a saint. Foucauld was declared venerable on 24 April 2001 by John Paul II, then blessed on 13 November 2005 by Benedict XVI.
