Third Republic (1870-1940). Medal, Le Matin newspaper award, by René Riberon 1904, Paris.
Ruedas cf. 65; Silver - 64.79 g - 51 mm - 12 h
Silver hallmark on the edge. In a leather and velvet case, marked in gold letters "Le Matin / ALGER-TOULON AUTOMOBILE / 1905". Matt finish. Superb Fleur de coin.
The newspaper Le Matin detailed the list of prizes in its edition of September 9, 1905, the total of which exceeded 200,000 francs (list attached). In the section on prizes awarded at local races and festivals, both in Algiers and Toulon, mention is made of 125 silver medals and 200 bronze medals donated by Le Matin.
The first motorboat race between Algiers and Toulon, with a stopover in the Balearic Islands, was won by Camille du Gast (1868-1942), known as the green-eyed Amazon, or the Valkyrie of Mechanics. A French racing driver, she was a pioneer in this field, but also excelled at pistol shooting, rifle shooting, skiing and tobogganing. She was also a horse trainer. In May 1905, she won (officially two months after the end of the race) the 500-mile Algiers-Toulon nautical race with her Camille, a 13-metre, 43-ton boat powered by a 90 CV C.G.V. engine on the back of a Parisian Pitre hull.
