Description
FRANCE - FRANCE
Charles X (1824-1830). 5 francs, 2nd type, satirical engraving in Jesuit 1827, A, Paris.
G.644 - F.311 - Schweyer 16, p.70-77, fig.18 ; Silver - 24,67 g - 37 mm - 6 h
Summary satirical engraving, transforming the king into a Jesuit with a large skullcap and an alb. Some dirt. VERY GOOD CONDITION.
These engraved coins, transforming King Charles X into a Jesuit, are based on a caricature published on 1 April 1830 in the newspaper "La Silhouette", which led to it being banned and the owner being fined 1,000 francs. Christian Schweyer dates these changes either to the end of the reign of Charles X, on new coins, or to the beginning of the Third Republic, on circulating coins such as ours.
