Auguste de Châtillon (1806-1881) was a versatile French artist, painter, sculptor and poet, a member of the "bohème du Doyenné" alongside Nerval and Gautier.
A close friend of Victor Hugo, he produced famous portraits of the poet's family, notably that of his daughter Léopoldine, and designed the costumes for the play Le Roi s'amuse.
After an unsuccessful stay in New Orleans, he turned to poetry with collections such as Chant et poésie, remaining famous for his anti-authoritarian poem "La Levrette en paletot".
At the Salon of 1836, he exhibited a portrait of Victor Hugo and his son in their flat on the Place des Vosges [Maison Victor Hugo Paris, inv. 194].
