Description
FRANCE - FRANCE
Third Republic (1870-1940). 5 centimes, 2nd type Nation Française, counter money of Jean Gache in Lyon 1873, Lyon.
GEM.249.2; Zinc - 4.78 g - 25 mm - 12 h
Small spots of oxidation. Superb.
The counter-coin would consist of a token, either of copper or of any other metal; gold, silver and copper would each be represented by a different colour. These tokens would have no monetary value, but on one side they would say: French Nation, COUNTER-MONEY. On the other side would also be the State hallmark, which alone would guarantee this value. Around the circle would appear: LA LOI PUNIT LE CONTREFACTEUR (THE LAW PUNISHES THE COUNTERFEITOR), plus the value of the token: 5 c. 10 c. or 1 fr. Similarly for banknotes: counter-notes would be made, also bearing the State stamp. The notes would be stamped with the words: COUNTER-NOTES. The purpose of the tokens in question would be to control the continuous and reciprocal transactions that take place between citizens.
