Description
GRANDE-BRETAGNE - UNITED KINGDOM Victoria (1837-1901). Medal, The Holy Alliance France, England and Turkey against Russia, by Allen & Moore 1854, Birmingham. BHM.2536 - Eimer 1489; Pewter - 26.68 g - 44.5 mm - 12 h From an iNumis auction on 8 December 2020, No. 229, then from the Pierre-René Bauquis collection. Some marks and rubbing on the obverse. Superb. The Holy Alliance was part of the Crimean Campaign (1854-1855). At the root of the conflict was a surreal quarrel between the French Emperor Napoleon III and Tsar Nicholas I. Each wanted to ensure the exclusive protection of the other. Each wanted to ensure the exclusive protection of the Holy Places of Jerusalem, an integral part of the Turkish Empire. As the Sultan of Istanbul seemed to give preference to the Catholics represented by Napoleon III, Tsar Nicholas I proposed to England that they share the crumbling Turkish Empire. England refused, fearing that Russia would acquire too much influence in the Mediterranean and the East. Dejected, the Tsar attacked and destroyed the Turkish fleet in the Black Sea on his own initiative. He also invaded the Romanian provinces of the Turkish Empire. The French emperor, who had proclaimed on his accession: The Empire is peace", was pushed into war by his young wife, the beautiful Eugénie de Montijo, who wanted to promote Catholic interests. Napoleon III and Queen Victoria's British government made common cause with the Sultan. It was the first time since the coronation of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II Plantagenet, 700 years earlier, that the two nations were preparing to fight together. Citing the preservation of the Ottoman Empire, the two allies sent their fleets to the Black Sea.
