Description
JAPAN - JAPAN Mutsuhito or Meiji (1867-1912). One yen, with "Gin" countermark Year 23 (1890), Osaka. JNDA.01-10C - KM.28a.2 ; Silver - 26,85 g - 38 mm - 6 h Countermark 銀 (Gin) left on reverse and other merchant countermarks obverse and reverse. TTB. The existence of the countermark is due to Japan's adoption of the gold standard in March 30 of the Meiji Era (1897), which led to a fall in the price of silver, allowing overseas merchants to exchange gold with the government, resulting in a huge flight of gold and an influx of silver. By applying countermarks, silver yen could be exported to Taiwan, Korea and southern Manchuria (then under Japanese control) for circulation, or sold as bullion in Shanghai or Hong Kong. At the same time, counter-marked silver yen could no longer be exchanged for gold in Japan. This measure came into force in October 1897, but was cancelled in March of the following year due to confusion on the market. (source : https://fr.numista.com/135906)
