VERY GOOD. The Moroccans supported Abd-el-Kader in his fight against French domination in Algeria. The government of King Louis-Philippe demanded reparation and the Sultan of Morocco, Abd ar-Rahman ibn Hicham, responded evasively to the French ultimatum, leading to the bombardment of Tangier on the morning of 6 August 1844. Despite the city's response, it was destroyed. The squadron, made up of the vessels Jemmapes, Suffren and Triton, the brigs Argus and Cassard, the frigate Belle-Poule and a number of steamers, then headed for Mogador, arriving on 12 August.
