The penal colony of New Caledonia is in activity of 1864 to 1924 with various centres, like Bourail, centre of agricultural penitentiary colonization. More than 4,000 convicts came to Bourail where they built the buildings needed for the prison administration. Bourail also consisted of huge sugar cane fields where the convicts worked to service the nearby sugar factory. At the end of their sentence, they were released and had to settle on concessions, with no possibility of returning to mainland France.
