Description
NEW CALEDONIA - NOUVELLE-CALÉDONIE Third Republic (1870-1940). Medal, Chicago International Exhibition, French section, Bourail Prison Administration, by O. Roty 1893, Paris. Maz. cf. 59; Silver plated bronze - 69.28 g - 50 × 53 mm - 12 h Slightly marked copy on the high reliefs. Rare attribution. Superb. The penal colony of New Caledonia was in operation from 1864 to 1924 with various centres, such as Bourail, an agricultural penal colony. More than 4,000 convicts came to Bourail where they built the buildings needed for the prison administration. Bourail also consisted of huge sugar cane fields where the convicts worked to service the nearby sugar factory. At the end of their sentence, they were released and had to settle on concessions, with no possibility of returning to mainland France.
