Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) – The New Yorker. 1976. 107 × 73 cm. Original poster, offset print. Mounted on canvas. Condition A–, very minor, discreet mounting flaws. With the humour and almost surrealist touch for which the artist is known, he presents here a panoramic view of 9th and 10th Avenues in New York, looking out over the rest of the United States as far as the Pacific Ocean. This image also appeared on the cover of the magazine’s 29 March 1976 issue. The idea was probably to symbolise that the magazine covers topics from across the whole of America, and even beyond, from a New York perspective. That is why the poster-map features Washington, Texas, Mexico City, Utah, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nebraska, Kansas City, Chicago, and even Canada, Japan, China and Russia. As with the following poster, the striking visual goes beyond that of a press poster and is almost a tourism poster for the USA as seen through Woody Allen’s eyes.
