Wieslaw Walkuski (1956–) – Tootsie. 1984. Original poster, offset print. 97 × 67 cm. Unmounted. Condition A-, very slight tears at the very edges, two creases caused by printing defects.
Posters featuring cross-dressing men are rare. Most of those known are extremely rare examples used to promote cabarets in Paris. One might therefore assume that this poster for an American cinema classic is quite common, and yet it is one of the rarest for this film, of which only a few dozen copies remain in the world.
It was produced for the film’s release in Poland. Far removed from the American version, this poster – designed by an excellent poster artist – reveals the entire plot without being garish, and suggests a homoerotic world. It is curious to note the parallel between the poster and Philippe Auliac’s photograph of the transsexual Jayne County applying make-up in front of a mirror, taken in 1977.
Although this film is not about homosexuality, it has nonetheless become a cult classic within the LGBTQ and drag queen communities.
It was directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange and Bill Murray in the lead roles.
