Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) – *Lorenzaccio* by Alfred de Musset. Adapted by Armand d’Artois. 1896. Imprimeur Champenois. 208 x 76.5 cm. Original poster, lithographic print, mounted on canvas. Grade A, fresh colours, brilliant gold details. Very slight creases from handling in the theatre details. Remarkable condition. Reference: Rennert – Weill 20. Based on an idea by George Sand, Alfred de Musset published his novel in 1834, a work fully rooted in the nascent Romantic movement. It was not until 1896 that the novel was adapted for the stage. The play features Laurent de Médicis as a disillusioned bon vivant, somewhat in the mould of Musset himself. This poster is remarkable in that it depicts Sarah in a role where she is dressed as a man. A poster that caused a scandal, of course – this openly bisexual woman publicly disguising herself as a man on posters for all to see: what a shock. The critics? She couldn’t care less. The scandal? She embraced it. She was the ‘Sacred Monster’. Good heavens! And whilst Mucha had accustomed us to flamboyant Art Nouveau, in this composition his style is tinged with neo-Gothic elements, featuring dragons and chimeras. It is therefore one of the two posters that marked turning points in the career of the Berhardt–Mucha duo, the first being, of course, the poster for *Gismonda* in 1894. It’s amusing to note that this is the only poster featured in the 2014 film *La Divine*, in which Sarah is played by Sandrine Kiberlain.
