Description
Milton Glaser (1929–2001) – Bob Dylan. 1966. 83.8 × 55.8 cm. Original poster, lithographic and offset print, unmounted. Condition A – traces of original creases.
To promote his forthcoming album, ‘Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits’, the record label CBS commissioned Milton Glaser to create a special poster to accompany it. To this end, the most famous American poster artist of the time drew inspiration from Marcel Duchamp’s self-portrait. The result is a whirlwind of colours blending psychedelia and pop art, evoking the visual effects of the drugs that were gaining popularity within the counter-culture.
There is a legend surrounding this design, as the word ‘Elvis’ can be made out in the hair. One might have thought it was a tribute to Elvis Presley, but decades later Glaser debunked this legend, stating that he himself had been unaware of it, as it was a complete coincidence.
Whilst this image is now considered a classic of American culture, it is not actually a billboard but a poster, as it was given away as a promotional gift with the record. This explains why the originals still bear these crease marks.
